In response to ongoing tensions with Iran and disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, U.S. President Donald Trump has called on American citizens to tolerate slightly elevated gasoline prices. Speaking at a rally in New York, Trump asserted that paying “a tiny little bit more” for fuel is a worthwhile trade-off to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapon capabilities. He further suggested that he might consider declaring the strategic Strait of Hormuz as “a territory of the United States” following a victory over Iran.
Iran has firmly dismissed Trump’s remarks, maintaining that the Strait of Hormuz will remain under its jurisdiction. Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi reiterated that the blockade will persist until the United States acknowledges what he termed as its defeat. Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi noted that Tehran has not reached a decision on resuming talks with Washington. He emphasized that shipping through the crucial waterway would not recommence unless the U.S. complies with Iran’s conditions.
The impasse has considerably affected tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital passage for international oil and natural gas deliveries. This disruption has contributed to an increase in crude oil prices, consequently exerting upward pressure on fuel costs. The average price of gasoline in the United States has climbed to approximately $4.08 per gallon, marking a rise of about 29% compared to the previous year. Additionally, Brent crude prices are expected to experience a notable weekly surge.
The economic ramifications of the standoff are also impacting Iran, with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian attributing the country’s rising inflation to the U.S.-imposed blockade, sanctions, and limitations on Iranian oil exports. Despite these challenges, the Trump administration has indicated the possibility of implementing further financial sanctions against Tehran, as diplomatic efforts to secure a ceasefire remain stalled.
