Google Penalized €890M for Breaching EU’s Digital Innovation Regulations

by admin477351

The European Union has levied a substantial fine of €890 million on Google for violating the Digital Markets Act (DMA) with its conduct related to the search engine and app store. This action by the European Commission aims to address Google’s preferential treatment of its own services and its restrictions on app developers.

The fine is divided into two main components. Firstly, Google has been penalized €460 million for prioritizing its own services, such as shopping and hotel listings, above those of competitors in search results. Secondly, an additional €430 million penalty has been imposed for limiting app developers from directing users to more cost-effective alternatives available on their own websites or through other app stores.

Under the ruling, Google is required to ensure that third-party services that appear in its search results are treated impartially and without bias. Furthermore, the company must permit app developers to promote offers outside of the Google Play Store, thus fostering greater competition and consumer choice in the digital marketplace.

EU officials have acknowledged that Google has started testing modifications to its search results, which they view as a significant step towards aligning with the provisions of the Digital Markets Act. This decision is expected to drive increased competition within digital markets across the European Union while necessitating further adjustments in Google’s business practices.
