In 2025, Luxembourg found itself among the bottom three European Union countries in terms of renewable electricity consumption, according to recent data from Eurostat. Despite an overall trend of increasing renewable energy use across the EU, Luxembourg’s reliance on renewable sources reached only 20.2% of its gross final energy consumption, marking it as one of the EU’s lower performers. Specifically in electricity, just 23.3% of Luxembourg’s gross consumption was sourced from renewables, a figure only slightly higher than that of Czechia and Malta.
The European Union as a whole made significant strides in renewable energy, with 26.2% of its gross final energy consumption coming from renewable sources in 2025. This marks a substantial increase from 9.6% in 2004. The EU has set an ambitious target to further elevate this share to 42.5% by the year 2030, reflecting its ongoing commitment to boosting renewable energy adoption across the continent.
Leading the charge within the EU, Sweden achieved an impressive 65.4% of its overall energy consumption through renewable sources, setting the standard for other member states. Finland and Denmark followed closely behind Sweden, showcasing significant achievements in integrating renewables into their energy grids.
In terms of electricity, Austria emerged as the frontrunner, with more than 90% of its electricity generated from renewable sources. This accomplishment underscores Austria’s leadership in sustainable energy practices within the European Union, serving as a benchmark for others striving to enhance their renewable energy contributions.
