Tech-Fueled Demand Drives Spain’s Petrol Prices Beyond €2 for 11 Weeks

The impending expiration of Spain’s government fuel discount could lead to further financial strain for motorists, with petrol and diesel prices already on the rise. The temporary discount, which provides a relief of 5 cents per litre on petrol and 20 cents on diesel, is set to end on September 30. This change comes as petrol prices have surged for the 11th straight week, with more than 150 service stations in Aragón already charging over €2 per litre.

On a national level, the average price for regular petrol climbed to €1.866 per litre as of September 17, reflecting a 2.88% increase from the previous week. Diesel prices have also ascended, reaching €1.834 per litre after a short-lived decline. The escalation in fuel costs is largely attributed to rising global oil prices, driven by disturbances in energy supply chains in the Middle East, which have intensified pressures on crude oil markets. Given Spain’s dependency on imported crude, the nation is particularly vulnerable to fluctuations in international prices.

Industry analysts warn that the cessation of the government discount could propel diesel prices to surpass the €2 per litre mark, while petrol prices might closely follow. The situation underscores the importance for drivers to compare prices across different service stations to manage household fuel expenses effectively. With the cost of living already under strain, the potential increase in fuel prices is likely to deepen the financial burden on Spanish consumers.

As Spain grapples with these rising costs, motorists are advised to stay informed about fuel price trends and seek cost-saving measures where possible. The pressure on household budgets is expected to grow, especially with the anticipated hikes once the discount expires. As such, the coming weeks could present significant challenges for consumers reliant on fuel for daily transportation.
