The European Union has imposed new regulations on Google, mandating increased accessibility to its Android platform and search services. These directives are part of a broader initiative to foster competition within the digital marketplace.
According to the new guidelines, Google is required to make 11 specific Android features available to developers of competing artificial intelligence technologies. This will allow rival AI assistants to utilize essential device functions and execute voice commands in a manner akin to Google’s Gemini assistant. Users are expected to experience these changes with an Android update slated for July 2027.
In addition to platform access, Google will also need to share certain anonymized search data with AI firms and other search service competitors. This data sharing is intended to help these companies enhance their own search-related products. However, Google retains the right to vet these companies to ensure they meet cybersecurity and data protection criteria before any data is exchanged. This aspect of the regulations is set to be implemented starting January of the coming year.
The European Commission has emphasized that these measures are designed to maintain user privacy and device security while simultaneously promoting increased competition in the AI and online search sectors. The changes are part of the EU’s Digital Markets Act, an effort to diminish the dominance of large tech companies and broaden consumer choices in digital services.
